Artemis

Another not so great weekend, we had to let a cat go. Artemis, was put down this afternoon and she will be missed greatly in my home. I could say I have known and had her since she was a kitten and its just painful to see them go. She went down hill fast and we could have spent a small fortune for possibly little gain. Do we miss her, yes but sometimes this is the better choice. I hope she is at peace and is able to rest on the rainbow bridge in the sky with Ty. May we meet again in someway.

Switching from Nest to UniFi for cameras

When I bought my home a few years ago I knew I wanted to do something with my home network that would be better than what I had been doing. I ended up going UniFi. I bought a couple of U6-Lites and installed them on my second floor ceiling in two places. I also picked up a Lite 16 PoE to power them. With a USG-3P to be the router. I of course self hosted the controller for all of that in a docker container. This little did I know was the begninning.

Incogni

Today I finally got tired of seeing so much spam, junk call and texts. Also in the past I have had someone take one bit of information about me and then do a search and was able to tell me a uncomfortably ammount of data about me. I set about looking at the various data privacy/removal tool/sites. My goal is to reduce the ammount of information about me out there so the bar is just low already. Which should hopefully have a knock on effect in reducing junk email/mail/text/calls. Only time will tell.

Fail2ban Setup

I finally got annoyed enough with the SSH login spam I decided it was time to do something about it. Normally one would whitelist the port to certain addresses or change the port it listens on. Both of these are good but I feel they do not do enough. Sure there are other ssh hardening steps that I did but I wanted just a bit more. Enter Fail2Ban which will read the logs and extract out the IPs of devices attempting to login and failing. At which point if the IP trips the threshold actions are taken against it. So I did a simple setup of fail2ban that I intend to extend in the future but wanted to write up about it so far.
